Overview
Kenalog-10 is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for intralesional (injected directly into the skin) treatment of several conditions, including alopecia areata. The drug is indicated when the diagnosis is clear and the lesion is appropriate for intralesional steroid injection. Kenalog-10 is also known by its drug name, triamcinolone acetonide.

Kenalog-10 is a corticosteroid, a type of drug that reduces inflammation (swelling and immune response). In alopecia areata, it is believed to work by reducing inflammation around the hair follicles, which can help stop hair loss and allow regrowth.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Kenalog-10 is given by injection directly into the affected skin (intralesional injection). The recommended schedule allows for repeated injections at weekly or less frequent intervals, depending on the specific needs and response of the individual receiving it. The drug should be administered exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Kenalog-10 include thinning of the skin at the injection site, changes in skin color, local infection, and discomfort or pain at the site of injection. Systemic side effects (those affecting the whole body) are less common but may occur, especially with larger doses or frequent injections. These can include weight gain, swelling, hypertension (high blood pressure), and mood changes.

Rare but serious side effects may include anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions), increased risk of infections, suppression of adrenal gland function, high blood sugar, glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), cataracts, and osteoporosis (bone loss). Rare complications specific to injection can include tissue atrophy (shrinking of the skin or fat), and, in some cases, systemic effects if the drug is absorbed into the body in significant amounts.
